Drinks at The Shard

27 Jul 2015

As someone who is afraid of heights and lifts/elevators, The Shard doesn't exactly seem the most logical place for me to visit. However, whilst in London on Saturday that is one of the places I went to and I absolutely loved it.

Upon entrance to The Shard you go through to a lift which takes you up to the 32nd floor where 3 bars/restaurants are located in what feels like 5 seconds - I must admit, this I did not like at all as it made me feel super dizzy but at least it was over quickly. I had a look each of the three bars/restaurants there, all of which had such an air of luxuriousness, were beautifully decorated, and looked absolutely pristine as you would expect but the one we ended up having drinks in was Hutong.

Hutong serves cuisines from Northern China in it's restaurant and it's cocktails are "inspired by traditional ingredients used in Chinese medicine" which means some of them contain pretty weird things that you wouldn't expect in your drink, if you ask me. The non-alcoholic cocktails all seemed more to my liking because of this, so I went for one called 'Dragon Flower' which I believe consisted mainly of dragon fruit, elderflower and cranberry juice (you can see a video of it being made on my Instagram). It tasted amazing and all of the others I had a sip of were really good too, not to mention beautifully presented in a variety of different ways including in a mini teapot!

The prices are high (there's an £800 bottle of champagne if you fancy it) and eating there breaks the bank even more I'm sure, but in my opinion it is totally worth it as everything is top quality and you are paying for the incredible atmosphere of being in such a stunning place too. Plus, you can have just one drink if needs be and it is still cheaper than going up to the viewing gallery.

The entire experience of being in The Shard was so amazing. I wasn't even afraid of how high up we were because the view of London is just so incredible that you can't help but snap lots of photos and enjoy it. On that note I must add, on a nice day like we were blessed with it has perfect natural lighting so if you're wondering why your friends are taking extra long in the bathroom it's because they're probably having a good ol' selfie session.

I would absolutely 100% recommend paying a visit to The Shard if you've been thinking about it or if you want to do something special when you're in London, I had a great time and am desperate to visit again to go in one of the other bars and see what they have to offer. I'd love to check out the view at nighttime too!

Have you been to The Shard? Where else would you recommend for drinks in London?

  3. I had no idea what was in The Shard! It's just one of those things that, as a non-British person, you just know about. You aren't necessarily aware of what is inside.

The drinks look so yummy! And the decor and view are gorgeous! You definitely lucked out with a nice, sunny day :)
