My Makeup Staples

2 Jul 2015

When I do my makeup in the mornings there are certain products which I use almost every day, absolutely love, and constantly repurchase when they run out. These are my fail-safe products which I have tried and tested hundreds of times and work really well for me. I like to call them my makeup staples as they form the basis of my everyday makeup look and then I can add in the other products which I like to change up depending on how I feel. I haven't included any blushers/bronzers, eyeshadows or lipsticks as these tend to be the products which I do like to change and I simply couldn't pick one staple but I may do a separate post on my favourites from each of those categories in the future.

Firstly is the foundation that I tend to reach for each day - the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation in the shade 51 light vanilla. I must admit, I'm not too adventurous with foundations as I am always quite nervous to spend a lot on something that may not work for me which is why I haven't found my perfect high-end foundation yet, even though I do believe a more expensive base product is definitely worth it. This foundation is one that I have been using for over a year now and it is definitely a firm favourite of mine. It is a great colour, doesn't cling to any dry patches, gives a good amount of coverage for my skin, has a lovely finish which isn't overly dewy, and it's affordable at only £10.99! I really don't have anything bad to say about this product and I will definitely be continuing to repurchase it as I haven't yet found a foundation I love more.

Next is my Bobbi Brown Corrector in the shade Extra Light Bisque. I've spoken about this recently in an empty products post so I won't go into too much detail again, but dark under-eye circles are my absolute nemesis when it comes to applying makeup and this product definitely helps at correcting the blue tones and making concealer work more effectively at covering them. The only con is that recently I've found it has been making the area dry but this may be as I need a more hydrating eye cream. It comes in the cutest, tiny pot but it actually lasts a really long time if you have a light hand.

Something I've also spoken about before is the No7 Instant Radiance highlighter. Comparable to Benefit's Watts Up or NARS The Multiple in Copacabana, this is a cream highlighting stick which does as the name says and provides an instant radiant look. I use this every day on my cheekbones and it gives such a natural yet still noticeable glow. This is the only highlighter which I use at the moment as I prefer it over all of the others I've tried. Read my full review on it here for more info and images.

Next is eyebrows and though I do like filling them in with eyeshadow and an angled brush, what I most commonly use is Archery by Soap & Glory. I use the one with the tint and pencil in the shade Brownie Points and it's practically the perfect colour for me. This is just so quick and easy and fills in the brows really naturally whilst giving definition - I actually prefer the tint end but the pencil is also great. You can't go wrong with this product in my opinion and I would recommend it to anybody looking for something to use on their brows whether it's for the first time filling them in or not.

The first cream eyeshadow that I ever purchased is still one that I love today and you can probably tell by how empty it's getting. The Maybelline Colour Tattoo in On and On Bronze is such a versatile product which I use both on it's own for a simple eye look or as a base with powder eyeshadow on top. The formula of these eyeshadows are so great and long-lasting and it's definitely a go-to product for me during summer in particular as I have hayfever so never want something too heavy on my eyes as it will irritate them even more. I also own a couple of MAC Paint Pots which I love just as much but this is definitely a staple for me as it's the perfect colour and I'm not afraid to use it a lot as it's very budget-friendly.

My last staple is an eyeliner, as again mascara is something I change up because I haven't found the perfect one, but I always do a thin line of liquid eyeliner to define my eyes and my make up never feels complete without it. My personal choice is the L'Oreal Super Liner Perfect Slim, I love felt tip liners as they're incredibly easy to apply and this one stays black throughout the day. Also, with prolonged use some tips of felt tip liners can go quite flimsy and not work as well but this one stays pretty strong until the very end and it also doesn't dry out quickly at all.

So that is all for my current makeup staples, I am actually surprised that the majority of the products I love most and use daily are my affordable products as opposed to my high-end products! I hope you enjoyed reading this (well done if you made it to the end), and do let me know what your staple makeup items that you can't be without are.

  2. I'm exactly the same; although I have a ridiculous amount of makeup I find most days I constantly reach for the same things. I've only tried the regular Healthy Mix foundation but I've been meaning to try the serum one for ages (sometimes I feel like I'm the only person not to have tried it!)
