Cinderella: The Costumes

13 Apr 2015

On Saturday evening I went to the cinema for what seems like the first time in ages to see the new Cinderella movie. I loved the film itself (despite some emotional scenes which I should've known were coming!) and would definitely recommend any Disney fan to go and watch, but of course what caught my eye and I knew I had to share my thoughts on were Cinderella's costumes.

All the hype has been around the Swarovski glass slippers, which were truly magical, but my attention was mainly focused on two of the gowns designed by Sandy Powell that the lucky Lily James got to wear - though I've heard they weren't too comfortable! First up was Cinderella's show-stopping ballgown, transformed by the fairy godmother from her late mother's simple pink number into an amazing glittering blue masterpiece. I really was in awe the whole time this dress was on my screen and paired with the glass slippers it just made the actress dazzle and really brought the whole fairytale atmosphere to life. It definitely was not hard to understand why all eyes were on Cinderella at the ball. The skirt of the dress was my favourite part as it shimmered gorgeously and different blues shone through, but I also loved the little appliqué butterflies along the neckline/shoulders. I found myself wishing I could actually wear this dress though somehow I don't think there would be any event quite suitable in the real world but it's nice to dream, right?

Quite a contrast to the ballgown but I think my favourite of the two was Cinderella's wedding dress, a beige-coloured gown  with a hand painted floral design. Ever since I saw the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton I have loved wedding dresses with long sleeves like the one Kate wore, so this one I immediately fell for. I think this piece truly express the personality of Cinderella as though it is quite simple the injection of colour in the form of flowers especially suits the character. My favourite part is the bodice which is just beautifully cut and looks so elegant with the sheer sleeves, then the long flower adorned train adds a bit of wow-factor. Although I think the skirt would personally be too much for me in real life, I would love the top of my dress to look like that if I were to get married in the future as my friend and I agreed even a small amount of colour adds a nice touch.

Paired with natural yet well chosen make-up, the costumes really allowed the character of Cinderella to shine through in my opinion and also made for gorgeous visuals on screen which I believe both children and adults alike would be in awe of. This film did really have me wishing I could be a princess whilst I was watching!

To end this post, I'd just like to apologise for being inactive these past two weeks. First I had to start work on my assignment and then I was actually poorly for a week which wasn't too good. I hope you enjoyed reading this and make sure you see the new film if you're a fan of the original.
